Located approximately 70 km to the north of Barcaldine, Aramac was first established in the 1860’s on land owned by Robert Ramsey Mackenzie with the name emanating from a play on his name RRMac. Robert Mackenzie subsequently moved into politics and was Queensland’s first Treasurer and held the position of Premier. An interesting feature of the town is the tramway which was built in the early 1900’s to connect the town with the main rail line at Barcaldine. Although closed in 1975, part of the tramway now acts as a tourist attraction and is located on the southern side of the town. Water activities are available on nearby lakes such as Lake Galilee & Lake Dunn with the former attracting a variety of birdlife.
