Baralaba, a rural town, is 150 km west of Gladstone and located in the Shire of Banana, adjacent to the Dawson River. It is thought that the name was derived from an Aboriginal expression describing a high mountain. The town has a population of around 500 and was established in the early 1900’s with coal & gold mines becoming established 15-20 years later supported by a rail to Rannes. Serious floods in the late 1920’s resulted in closure of the coal mine. Farming activities were established once an infestation of prickly pear was eradicated in the early 1930’s with cropping of sorghum, wheat and cotton.
