Located approximately 520 miles to the west of Rockhampton, and established in 1886 on land requisitioned from Crombie property ‘Barcaldine’, the town is perhaps best known as the origin of the Australian labour movement. The town was established in the mid 1880’s and was connected to Rockhampton by rail. By the late 1880’s, the town was the home to an organisation of shearers and labourers together with the Pastoral Employer’s Association, the latter responsible for reducing pay rates for shearers. Shearers and rural workers retaliated and by 1891, hundreds gathered at meetings (a number held under large tree referred to as the tree of Knowledge’ and commemorated as the ‘birthplace’ of the Australian Labour Party. The Lloyd Jones Weir, located approximately 15 km from town off the highway towards Blackall, is popular with tourists offering picnic facilities, bird watching and water sports.
