Coal was first discovered in 1845 and the first mine opened in 1892 but was short lived, closing in in the early 1900’s. Subsequently, large scale coal mining commenced in the 1960’s with more than one half of the country’s export coking coal emanating from the Bowen Basin. Gas production in the Fairfield gas field started in early 1995 with the first commercial sales taking place three years later. Gas is gathered from around 100 wells and compressed and dehydrated before passing into the Queensland Gas Pipeline system. Ultimately the gas travels to Curtis Island from where it is exported. The Bowen Basin contains the largest reserves of coal in Australia and covers over 60,000 square kilometers of Central Queensland between Collinsville and Theodore. Most of the mining is carried out in the north of the Basin with a significant portion exported from Dalrymple Bay and Hay Point.
