The city of Bundaberg, established in 1868, is located on the Burnett River where it enters the northern end of Hervey Bay. In the mid 1870’s sugar farming commenced in a commercial manner and 13 years later it was producing around 20% of Queensland’s sugar. Despite the establishment of dairy farming in the region and occasional droughts, sugar remained the mainstay of agricultural production for Bundaberg. Bundaberg Sugar came into being in 1972 when Fairymead changed its name to ‘Bundaberg Sugar Company Limited and merged with Gibson & Howes Pty Ltd. More recently, a $40m upgrade to the Millaquin Mill was completed in 2012. Among the tourist attractions to be found in Bundaberg and the surrounding region are the Botanic Gardens, The Railway Museum and the Bundaberg Distilling Company Bondstore dating back to the late 1880’s.
