The city’s name reflects the gold mining background with ‘Charters’ named for the Gold Commissioner at the time of first settlement and ‘Towers’ for the conical hills located in the region. The goldfield did not reach its peak of gold production until 1899. During the period 1872-1899, Charters Towers changed from a rough settlement with bark and calico buildings to a thriving City of some 25,000 inhabitants. 100s of shafts were sunk during the lifetime of the field and the ore raised was processed through many large Treatment Batteries – it is estimated that 6,000,000 ounces of gold was processed in the first 40 to 50 years of the life of the fields. The peak gold yield was in 1899, but thirteen years later mining had effectively ceased. There followed a period of development and progress with Charters Towers being declared a city in 1909. The City now provides a focal point for a thriving beef industry and provides education facilities for the surrounding region.
