Eromanga in the Shire of Quilpie is known for being the furthest town from the ocean in Australia (although this claim has been questioned) and for being the location for the exciting discovery of many dinosaur remains dating back to just under 100 million years ago. The town lies on the edge of what is called the Eromanga Inland Sea, which existed in the Early Cretaceous. The Eromanga region has abundant oil wells, and opal mines. There are also agricultural industries such as cattle and sheep as many pioneering property owners came and took up land in the 1860s. Eromanga is situated in the largest oil producing area in mainland Australia. The township hosts a refinery that refines crude oil and supplies automotive distillates, jet fuel and specialty chemicals. The refinery produces about 1.5 million barrels of oil a year. The town is serviced by an airstrip located on the site where Amy Johnson landed in 1930 mistaking it for Charleville.
