Hungerford is located on the Paroo River 970km north west of Sydney and 1040km west of Brisbane. Its location – over 200km North West of Bourke, is indicative of its remoteness. Sited on the Queensland-NSW border it now consists of little more than the Royal Mail Hotel and a gate in the local section of the Wild Dog Barrier Fence which stretches from the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia through to Jimbour in Queensland. The road from Hungerford to Bourke is remembered in Henry Lawson’s book “While The Billy Boils”. Other nearby attractions are the Currawinya National Park and the Paroo River which, despite having a catchment of over 75000 square kilometres, generally consists of a string of muddy waterholes.
