Located on the east cost of Cape York Peninsula, Lockhart River is a community with an unusual history. The town was established in 1924 when the indigenous people from the wider area were located at the Anglican Church Mission. The local airport was constructed during World War 2 as a bomber base. The mission was handed to the Queensland Government in 1967 and now has a strong cultural identity.
