Maryborough is located 250km north of Brisbane. The town was established in 1847 and during the 1800s was a major port of entry for immigrants into Queensland. It was named after the Mary River, around which the town is built. Maryborough has some of Queensland’s richest architectural heritage. Many of the 19th and 20th century buildings have been preserved in near pristine condition. Maryborough was a major Queensland port and the original wharf district is now home to many cultural locations. PL Travers, the creator of Mary Poppins, was born in Maryborough. You can tour the street and building she grew up with and see the public artwork based around her novels.
