Great Palm Island, also known as Palm Island, is located approximately 65km northwest of Townsville in the Great Barrier Reef. In 1972, Captain James Cook named the island as he sailed by during his first circumnavigation of the earth. During World War 2, the US Navy used Palm Island as a Naval Air Station for the operation and maintenance of the Catalina flying boats. The wrecks of some Catalina’s and the remains of the steel rails used to launch the flying boats back into the water can still be seen today. The island has a rich variety of tropical flora and fauna and offers art classes and art and history exhibitions.
