Set on the banks of the Balonne River, St George is located in South Western Queensland approximately 550km west of Brisbane. On 23 April 1846 (St George’s Day), Major Thomas Mitchell crossed the Balonne River and named the town St George. The town relies on agriculture and has a strong base of broadacre and irrigated farming. Popular features of the town include a river walkway, beautiful country gardens and magnificent streetscapes. The Balonne River has a reputation as an excellent place to fish for Murray Cod and Yellowbelly. The town was home to Warrant Officer Leonard Victor Waters, the only known Aboriginal fighter pilot to serve in World War 2.
