Devonport is located on the northern coast of Tasmania and is a disembarkation point for the Spirit of Tasmania ferry from the mainland. The Mersey River runs through the city and is used for a variety of water sports. The city began life as two towns on either side of the mouth of the Mersey River, with a ferry between the two. Both towns grew, and in 1890 they were joined and the newly formed town was called Devonport.
