Located on the banks of the Barwon River, Brewarrina is a town in northwest New South Wales nearly 800km from Sydney. The first Europeans arrived in the area around 1840, with the town formally established in 1860. Prior to that, the area had a rich indigenous history and was a meeting ground for over 5000 people. Today, fishing and water sports are popular in the area, with Murray Cod, Yellowbelly and catfish located in the area. Each June long weekend the town hosts the ‘Bre Big Fish’. A significant feature of the area is the Aboriginal fish traps. These ingenious traps are believed to be up to 40,000 years old, making them the oldest human construction in the world.
