Parkes is located in central New South Wales, and is most famous for the nearby Parkes Observatory which played a key role in the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969, and continues to operate to this day. The Dish is the second largest movable telescope in the southern hemisphere and one of the largest in the world. In 1998 the staff at the telescope and monitoring stations began detecting strange radio signals, which were thought to be from another galaxy. In 2015 it was finally determined the signals were actually coming from the microwave oven. Each year the town plays host to the Parkes Elvis Festival, where Elvis Presley fans and impersonators gather from all over the world to celebrate. The nearby Goobang National Park provides a great opportunity to enjoy some wonderful views of the surrounding country, and is well worth the walk.
