Located in the south western plains of New South Wales, Scotia Sanctuary is 650 km² nature reserve managed and owned by the Australian Wildlife Conservancy. The area comprises of two former grazing properties, and is characterised by a landscape of plains of red sand dunes and old woodlands. The area is home to some of the last threatened mammals such as Numbats, Bilbies, Bridled Nailtail Wallabies and Brush-tailed Bettongs. The area is also the largest on mainland Australia that does not contain cats and foxes. The area was acquired by the AWC to maintain this special area, and just as importantly, offer protection from these species from extinction. Scotia is closed to the public, but they accept volunteer workers offering a great opportunity to see some of these animals in their natural habitat, and learn more about their environment.
