The Aurukun community is located on the north west coast of Cape York Peninsula approximately 180 km south of Weipa and 800 km from Cairns. The 7500 square miles that make up the Shire of Aurukun encompasses much of traditional land populated by the Wik, Wik Way & Kugu people who still retain a strong cultural tie to their land. The majority of the population live within the township itself and the land reverted to native title following what is known as the Wik case. An interesting aside is the monitored security arrangements for the community consisting of multiple cameras operating with direct links back to Cairns. The primary tourist activities in the area are fishing and bushwalking. Visitors to Aurukun require a permit which can be obtained from the Aurukun Shire Council.
