Ballera is located in South West Queensland and along with Moomba in South Australia service the oil and gas industries based in the Cooper Basin. Gas processed through the Ballera facility is piped to Mount Isa or to Moomba some 180 miles to the South. Ballera, like Moomba, is not open to the public and is populated almost exclusively by a fly in, fly out population. The crude oil is not processed on site, rather, it is piped to Jackson some 65 miles to the south. Medical support is provided by the Royal Flying Doctor Service and there are no facilities or accommodation for travellers. The plant produces its own supply of potable water utilising water obtain from local bores and the sealed airstrip is privately operated by Santos Limited and only available for the public with prior approval.
