The town, named after Queensland’s second Governor – Sir Samuel Blackall, was first settled in the 1860’s. Renowned for its merino sheep production, the town has a rich history and is visited by many travellers throughout the year. The Great Artesian Basin supplies pure drinking water to the town and surrounds, with the water flowing under pressure from deep underground. The water reaches the surface at a temperature of around 58 degrees Celsius. The hot water also serves the local artesian spa bath located at The Aquatic Centre which is open throughout the year. An interesting aside is that the term ‘beyond the Black Stump’ is thought to have originated at Blackall and relates to the black stump (located on Thistle Street) which was used by surveyors in the late 1880’s to support their theodolites whilst conducting initial surveys in the town.
