Land provision for the town of Boulia on the Bourke River was initially gazetted in 1879 with the first land sales taking place in early 1883. The name ‘Boulia’ was derived from the name of the local waterhole located on land held by W. & L. Reid and W. Paterson. A telegraph station was opened in 1884 and the Flying Doctor Service commenced serving the area from it base in Cloncurry in 1928. Despite being located in an area with low average annual rainfall, Boulia became the centre of a prosperous pastoral area. An early settler in Boulia – Ernest Henry, also established the town of Hughenden and discovered the very rich mining fields in Cloncurry. The town receives regular air services and current road and tourism information is available from the Min Min Encounter Centre (named for the Min Min light).
