Located near the southern coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria, Burketown is the main administrative centre for the Shire of Burke. Established in 1865, Burketown is named after explorer Robert O’Hara Burke. Burketown is home to the Landsborough Tree. This tree was where William Landsborough setup camp when searching for the missing Burke and Wills expedition in 1862. He buries supplies near the tree in case the explorers should come across it and carved the work ‘Dig’ into the tree. Fishermen flock to the shire for the World Barramundi Fishing Championships during Easter each year. The shire is also famous for the meteorological phenomenon called the ‘Morning Glory’. These long, tubular clouds can reach up to 1000km long and are visible around Burketown during August to November.
