Dirranbandi is a rural town, located approximately 470 km south-west of Brisbane and midway between St George and the New South Wales border. Today Dirranbandi is largely a cotton town, with the local population swelling with seasonal pickers during harvest. The Dirranbandi Cotton Growers’ Association was formed in 1997, 11 years after the first local cotton crop. All cotton is irrigated and in 1989 the Cubbie cattle station on the Culgoa River, converted to irrigated cotton growing. A gin was installed at Dirranbandi. In 2009, following complaints about the loss of water flow into the Murray-Darling river system, and in relation to downstream properties being denied natural flooding for pasture growth, Cubbie was put up for sale and later in the year placed in the hands of administrators. In August 2012 the Australian Government approved the sale of Cubbie to an international consortium of Chinese & Australians and the purchase was completed in January 2013. Dirranbandi has a population of approx. 800 people and has an Airport, Hospital and Medical Centre.
