The Gayndah district was settled as a part of the great pastoral expansion of the late 1840s and Gayndah itself is a rural town on the Burnett River, where it is joined by Oakey Creek, 110 km west of Maryborough and 250 km north-west of Brisbane. Founded in 1849, it was once competing with Brisbane and Ipswich to be the state’s capital. Main Street’s heritage buildings and landscaped gardens illustrate the long history of the town, which is now central to a rich citrus-growing industry. Local attractions are Cania Gorge National Park, Bunya Mountains National Park and the Great Sandy National Park. There are significant fishing localities where keen anglers can catch a variety of different species of fish such as Barramundi, Bass, silver pearch, yellow belly and cod.
