Hervey Bay was named by Lieutenant James Cook in 1770 after Augustus John Hervey (1724-79), 3rd Earl of Bristol and a career naval officer. The Urangan Sugar Company was formed in 1884. The opening of a railway from Pialba to Maryborough gave sugar growers improved access to the large Maryborough sugar mill and also provided ready access to seaside activities for the residents of Gympie. The Pialba rail line closed in the 1970s with road travel becoming the prevalent means of transport. More recently, Cruises to Fraser Island, sailing and canoeing have provided low cost pastimes, and whale watching (Hervey Bay & nearby Fraser Island have been referred to as the ‘capital’ of Australian whale watching) is popular during July to October. A new airport was completed in 2005 and the city is serviced by direct flights from Sydney. With its pleasant year round climate, Hervey Bay has become a favoured retirement location. Nearby Fraser Island with its kilometres of sandy beaches supports the relaxed lifestyle that brings visitors back time after time to the region.
