Horn Island is the largest island located in the southern or ‘Prince of Wales’ island group of Torres Strait. The island became the commercial centre of the Torres Strait, attracting thousands of immigrants from Asia, the South Pacific and Europe to work in the booming pearl industry. The Second World War and the threat to Australia from the north was the catalyst for many works at Horn Island including construction of a large aerodrome with two airstrips, access roads, taxiways, bomb shelters, ammunition stores, gun emplacements, a jetty and a causeway. On 14 March 1942, Japanese planes bombed Horn Island – the first of 8 such occurrences during the war. The Horn Island airbase is used today as the main connecting airport to the Torres Strait region and is now owned and operated by the Torres Shire Council. In the years following the war, the pearling industry went into decline throughout the Torres Strait. Horn Island Airport, which also serves Thursday Island is a gateway for travellers to the mainland and outer islands. The current population consists of islanders drawn from all islands of the Torres Strait, as well as non-islanders. Residents travel daily by ferry across the Ellis Channel to Thursday Island for work and school.
