Located 110km north of Townsville in the Shire of Hinchinbrook, Ingham is the service centre for many sugarcane plantations. Ingham was founded in 1864 and has a strong Italian heritage as a result of the many Italian migrants who came to work in and around the town. Thousands of visitors visit the town in August each year for the annual Australian – Italian Festival. It is believed that more than half of the town’s population is of Italian descent. There are many amazing natural attractions in the area, including Australia’s highest permanent single drop waterfall called the Wallaman Falls and Hinchinbrook Island. The largest sugar mill in Australia is located near the town. Local producers use a network of private railways and tramlines to transport the sugar cane to the mill.
