Innisfail is located 88km south of Cairns on the Cassowary Coast. The town was initially named Geraldton after Thomas Henry FitzGerald who arrived in the area in 1879. It was renamed Innisfail in 1910 to avoid confusion with the town of the same name in Western Australia. The town has a rich cultural diversity with substantial populations of indigenous Australians, Italians, Indians and people from East Asia. This cultural diversity is celebrated each year with a number of annual events. The town is a major Banana and sugarcane producer. Nearby attractions such as the Great Barrier Reef and World Heritage Areas combined with a year round warm environment make this a great place to visit.
