The name Kingaroy comes from the aboriginal word for red ant ‘Kingaroori’ after a unique species of red ant found in the area. Kingaroy is located 210km north-east of Brisbane at the junction of the D’Aguilar and Bunya Highways. The town dates back to the 1840’s, however the construction of a railway line in 1904 led to the rapid growth of what is now modern-day Kingaroy. The town is home to the largest peanut processing plant in Australia. Local agriculture has traditionally revolved around peanuts and navy beans however the local region’s wine industry has expanded recently with a number of wineries either in or close to town. The Kingaroy Observatory provides day and night shows for people of all ages.
