Mareeba is located an hour’s drive east of Cairns. The town was settled by John Atherton in 1877. Starting out as a coach stop for Cobb & Co, the town grew with the introduction of the railway and post office in 1983. During World War 2, the Mareeba Airfield was used as a staging post for operations in New Guinea and the Pacific. Up to 10000 soldiers and airmen were stationed in the area. Attractions in the local area are varied. The range of tropical fruit farms and markets has given the town has a reputation as a food lovers paradise. Hot air balloon trips and a ride in a warbird are available from the airfield. In addition, the area is known for its rich variety of bird life. Annual events include the Mareeba Rodeo in July and the Multicultural Festival held in August.
