The town of Normanton was established in 1867 as an alternative to Burketown, which had been abandoned due to flooding. A gold boom in the 1880s and 1890’s saw the population boom, however by the mid 1900’s the population had declined due to the short life of the gold deposits. The town was originally called Norman River, however was renamed to Normanton by 1872. A railway was completed in 1891 between Normanton and Croydon, 150 kilometres to the east. The railway was never joined to the Queensland Rail network however has been operated by Queensland Rail. The train, called the Gulflander, is a popular tourist attraction in the area and the service continues to run between Normanton and Croydon once per week.
