Founded in the 1890’s, Proserpine is located in the Whitsundays, 25km west of Airlie Beach. Proserpine sits on the Proserpine River, which was named by explorer George Dalrymple after the Greek goddess Persephone. The construction of a sugar mill in the early 1890’s accelerated the town’s growth, and sugar is still one of the town’s main industries. The opening of the Proserpine Airport in the 1950’s continued the growth of the town. The airport recently gained international services. Local attractions include the Peter Faust Dam, the Proserpine Mill chimneys, the Proserpine water tower and mural and the Art Deco facades in Main street. The popular Airlie Beach is a short bus ride or drive away.
