Located near the New South Wales border, 225km from Brisbane lies Stanthorpe. The town was established by tin miners in the 1870’s. A downturn in the tin market led many residents to try their hand at farming. The cool climate was suitable for fruit and vegetables, with grapes originally planted following the encouragement of the local Catholic parish priest. Today there are more than 50 wineries in the region and the town is home to the annual Australian Small Winemakers Show in October each year. The Granite Belt national Parks of Girraween, Bald Rock, Sundown and Boonoo Boonoo are popular destinations. The Storm King Dam is a great place to visit and is ideal for bird watching, fishing and water sports.
