Locate 450km west of Brisbane, Surat is located on the Carnarvon Highway in the South West of Queensland. The town was surveyed in 1849 and was named of the former residence of a surveyor working for Surveyor-General Sir Thomas Mitchell. The town is set on the banks of the Balonne River, and fishing and other water sports including skiing are popular activities. The town was once home to a Cobb & Co Changing Station, the history of which is displayed in a local museum.
