Taroom is located on the Dawson River 380km northwest of Brisbane. Ludwig Leichardt, the Prussian explorer, passed through the area and marked a Coolabah tree with his initials as he went. The town was originally called Bonner Knob, however was renamed Taroom in 1856. The word Taroom is an aboriginal word meaning wild / native lime. On the bank of the Dawson River there is an unusual windmill, one of only six of its type. The frame and the fan of the windmill turn to the wind on a fully pivoting frame. Taroom holds a number of annual events each year including the New Years races in January, the Golden Horse Shoe campdraft in April, the professional rodeo event in July and the annual Leichardt Festival and Spring Races in September.
