Located on the Adventure Way, Thargomindah is located approximately 110km west of Brisbane. The name Thargomindah is taken from the aboriginal word meaning ‘cloud of dust’. In the 1860’s the town was established at a crossing point of the Bulloo River. Although the railway never reached the town, it continued to grow throughout the late 1800’s. In 1898 the town became one of the first towns in Australia to produce hydroelectric power. Thargomindah is believed to be the third town in the world to have hydroelectric street lighting, after London and Paris. The hydroelectric generator was used until 1951 when it was replaced with a diesel generator. The historic hydroelectric plan is open for tours every day of the week.
