Weipa is located on the western shore of Cape Your Peninsula and is the largest town on the peninsula. The town began as an Aboriginal mission in the early 1900’s, however the township was developed following the opening of the bauxite mine in 1965. Today, the mine is the largest bauxite mine in the world. The coastline north of Weipa is believed to be the site of the first interaction between Europeans and Indigenous Australians in 1606 when a Dutch ship, the Duyfken, of the Dutch East India Company, explored the area. Weipa is often referred to as the ‘Barramundi Capital of Queensland’ in honour of the world-renowned fishing in the area. Much of the surrounding area is untouched wilderness and boasts stunning beaches and isolated camping opportunities.
