Located 150km west of Melbourne, Colac was established on the shores of Lake Colac. Lake Colac is said to be the largest natural freshwater lake in Victoria. Farming and forestry have played a large role in the history of the town. Visitors to the area can take advantage of the nearby Great Otway Nation Park as well as the Red Rock Scenic Reserve. Historians will note that at Colac the Prime Minister at the time, Joseph Cook and the opposition leader, Andrew Fisher, both made speeches committing Australia to follow Britain should it join World War One. Less than a week later, Britain declared war and Australia followed.
