Located 80km south of Cooma between the Sapphire Coast and the Snowy Mountains is the town of Bombala. In 1903 the town was first proposed as the location for the capital of Australia due to it being located halfway between Sydney and Melbourne, however was eventually rejected for Canberra due to a lack of water. Agriculture dominates the surrounding area, with timber, beef cattle, wool and lavender being the principle agricultural industries. The town is known for its large population of Platypus as well as its trout fishing. The town is a popular destination for bushwalking and horse-riding, and the South East Forest Park is only 20km from the town.
