Located on the divide between the Centre West and North West Slopes regions of New South Wales, Coonabarabran is 450km north west of Sydney and is approximately half way between Melbourne and Brisbane. The area was visited by Europeans in the early 1800s and the town was established in the 1850’s. The Siding Spring Observatory, Australia’s largest optical telescope, is located near Coonabarabran and the town calls itself the ‘astronomy capital of Australia’. The observatory is a collection of 49 telescopes located in the Warrumbungle National Park, although not all telescopes are in working order.
