Delegate is a small town only a few kilometres from the border of New South Wales and Victoria, with the name supposedly derived from an aboriginal word meaning “high mountains”. Following the success of the ‘Cooee’ recruitment march originating in Gilgandra, twelve men set out from Delegate in early 1916 as the ‘Men from Snowy River’, to join the war effort. The march passed through Bombala, Bungendore and Queanbeyan before the men reached Goulburn, with the ‘Snowies’ having grown to a group 144 men strong. As tribute to the Snowies, the Men From Snowy River Memorial is certainly worth viewing. It is certainly worth a stroll along the Delegate Platypus Walk before visiting the Early Settlers Hut, and to take a look what it was like during first European establishment.
