In the central west of New South Wales lies Forbes, one of the best producing regions of the state on the banks of the Lachlan River. During one of the first inland trips exploring the country, in 1817 John Oxley famously declared “it is impossible to imagine a worse country”. Now, Forbes is now an agricultural hub for wheat, sheep, dairy and fruit. An attraction for many visitors is the grave of Ben Hall, a bushranger in the 19th century who was shot dead by police in Forbes after many raids and armed robberies. The McFeeter’s Motor Museum is a great stop for a coffee or to taste the local wines – and the natural lagoon Lake Forbes is the perfect place to have a picnic or go for a walk.
