Situated in the central west of New South Wales, Gilgandra is approximately half way between Melbourne and Brisbane. Known as the town of the windmills, the name Gilgandra originates from the Aboriginal word describing ā€œlong waterholeā€, which most consider to be tied to the town standing on the Castlereagh River. In 1915, a group of 35 men marched to Sydney to volunteer for the war – which became known as Home of the Coo-ees, after the distinct call the men shouted at each town along their journey to attract new recruits. The march took a month, by the time they reached Sydney – the group had grown to 263 recruits, making it the first and most successful recruitment marches of the First World War. Under an hour’s drive from Gilgandra is the Warrumbungle National Park, where a wonderful landscape for camping, bushwalking and stargazing awaits.
