Hillston is a small town in central New South Wales, on the banks of the Lachlan River. John Oxley discovered the area of the Hillston on his expedition following the Lachlan River, and famously recorded in his notes: “country uninhabitable and useless for all purposes of civilised man”. Today, over 1,500 people call the town their home. Water from the river is used for many purposes in Hillston, such as the growing of mangoes, oranges, olives and cherries. There are many fruit farms where one can stop by and enjoy the fresh, local produce. The Hillston Heritage trail offers an opportunity to take a step back in time and visit some of the historic sites of the town, such as the flour mill established in 1888.
