A small settlement on the banks of the Darling River, Louth is located in central northern NSW, approximately 830 north-west of Sydney. The town was established by Andrew Matthews who built a pub to take advantage of the passing river trade. Today Matthews is regarded as the “King of Louth”. Known best for its annual races, around 5000 visitors travel from across the country each year – the airstrip hosts around fifty aircraft during this time. The prize money on offer is greater than $30,000 but most people come to enjoy the isolation and bush character that the Louth Races give. Louth is also deeply embedded in agricultural history for being the first location in the world (at nearby Dunlop Station) to have mechanised sheep shearing.
