Maitland is a town in the beautiful Hunter Valley, 168km north of Sydney. Settled by farmers in the early 1800s, Maitland grew without any planning direction adding to its character. Its close location by the Hunter River has been the cause of many floods since European settlement, with over 200 having been recorded. At over 150 years old, the Maitland Goal has a fascinating history. Home to some of Australia’s best known criminals, the goal closed in 1998 – but now one can take a guided tour by an ex-inmate to learn some of the more interesting stories of its past prisoners and ambitious escapes. As a town in the Hunter region, naturally one cannot indulge in some of the local wines while having dinner and enjoying the view of the Hunter River.
