Mittagong is located 130km south west of Sydney, and is the gateway to the Southern Tablelands. The town’s name is a corruption of the Tharawal/Dharawal Aboriginal word for “marragon”, however some believe this means little mountain”, “High Mountain and even “plenty of native dogs”, as the Mittagong range was once home to many dingoes. The town is surrounded by the wonderful hills and waterfalls of the Southern Tablelands, and one can see the native Waratah coming to bloom in the warmer months. There are many sandstone buildings from the mid-19th century providing an insight into life for the early European settlers. Today, the town is still decorated with these buildings and picturesque gardens. Nearby Mount Gibraltar has great lookouts and numerous walking tracks, and the manmade Lake Alexandra is a great place to have a picnic, which was originally created to supply water for the coal trains almost 140 years ago.
