Tocumwal is situated on the banks of the Murray River in the southern Riverina region, roughly 270km north of Melbourne. Visitors travel from far to fish for the famous Murray Cod, with 23 beaches on the river all within five minutes of Tocumwal. Tocumwal airport became the largest aerodrome in the southern hemisphere during the Second World War, but now gliding enthusiasts from all over the world use it as a base to experience the famous thermals which provide some truly wonderful gliding conditions. The town played a significant role during the war, with the US using it as a major base. When the war ended, unfortunately the airport became an aircraft graveyard. The aeroplanes which remained were stripped and melted down. No trip to Tocumwal is complete without visiting the Big Murray Cod, a 204kg fibreglass structure on the Foreshore Park.
