Located in northern New South Wales, Walgett is approximately 690km north west of Sydney with a population of roughly 2,300 people. Walgett is the gateway to the outback opal fields, and sits on the Namoi River near the junction of the Barwon River, allowing area to have fertile black soil fundamental for the grazing of wool, wheat, cotton and sheep. Walgett was a major port in the late 19th century, with wool being the predominant item of trade. Paddle steamers travelled through the Murray-Darling system, and the first arrived in 1861. The Murray-Darling presents a fantastic opportunity to fish for the Murray cod and yellowbelly, with plenty of rivers nearby to throw a line in the water and enjoy the outback.
