A small town of roughly 1,100 people, Warialda is located in the north west slopes of New South Wales, some 500km north of Sydney. The name derives from the Weraerai word for “place of wild honey”. It is possible to still go fossicking in the area, with maps being available from the visitors centre so you can try your luck finding precious stones and gold. The Wells Gem and Mineral Collection gives one the opportunity to learn more about rough, cut and polished stones which have played a key part in the history of the town. Now, the town has a strong agricultural sector, with the area producing barley, wheat, sheep and beef cattle. Down the Gwydir Highway is Cranky Rock, where in the 1800s a Chinese man jumped off a large rock and into the creek in an attempt to escape from the pursuing police. Supposedly the ‘cranky’ man murdered a local woman and jumped to his death, and now the spot has a nice picnic/barbeque area where one can enjoy the view of the unusual boulder formations by the creek.
