Wellington is located at the junction of the Bell and Macquarie rivers, some 360km north west of Sydney. Famous explorer John Oxley was the first to discover the region, and named it after Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, who was one of the leading political and military figures in Britain in the 1800s. The original owners of the land are the Wiradjuri people, who are the largest Aboriginal group in the state. Today the Lion of Waterloo Tavern still stands after being built in 1841, and one can stop by for a cold drink and meal. A short drive from Wellington is the Welling Caves and Phosphate Mine, where 6000 tons of phosphate was mined during its short four year operation, which commenced in 1914.
